Limited Edition: 'I Know Who I Am' Bedspread

Designed by Sir Grayson Perry for Delusions of Grandeur, this Limited Edition is available in a series of only 50 pieces and is labelled to this effect.

In the exhibition, the bedspread is one of the hero pieces that Shirley Smith (Perry’s fictional artist alter-ego for the show) has created. It adorns her domestic space and reminds the visitor that for all its grandeur and theatricality, Hertford House, the seat of the Wallace Collection, was once a home. 

For Shirley, the Collection was a safe haven that offered such comfort and security that she imagined it her ancestral home. For Perry, ‘nothing could symbolise the refuge of a home more than curling up under the covers’ and he imagines Shirley making the piece and using it as ‘a talismanic protection for her body and her sense of identity’. The quotation at the bottom of the beautifully handmade, appliqued piece, declares I know who I am, a recurring motif for the whole show.
