Ary Scheffer's masterpiece is without doubt a museum favourite and must-see. The painting depicts Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo Malatesta condemned to the second circle of hell, reserved exclusively for the lustful, as Danta and Virgil pass through on their journey through the 'Inferno'. Although based on a passage from Dante's epic poem, The Divine Comedy, Francesca and Paolo were real life 13th century lovers caught in an affair by Francesca's husband, and Paolo's elder brother, who murdered them.
