Marquetry - creating patterns and pictures through inlaid veneers - has long been recognised as one of the most attractive and sophisticated methods of decorating fine furniture. The compositions of 18th-century Parisian marquetry were described by one contemporary as no less than 'paintings in wood'.
This Wallace Collection publication written by one of the museums former conservationists, Yannick Chastang, highlights the work of French craftsmen such as Andrè-Charles Boulle, Jean-Francois Oeben and Jean-Henri Riesener. Richly illustrated with objects from the collection, 'Paintings in Wood' explores the technical secrets behind this art form, as well as its origins history.
