A magnificent seventeenth-century château, Vaux le Vicomte is Nicolas Fouquet's renowned masterpiece. An avid collector and patron of the arts, the finance minister enlisted the most gifted artists and craftsmen of the period - including architect Louis Le Vau, decorator Charles le Brun, and landscape architect Andre Le Notre - to create his lavish residence that he filled with paintings and sculptures by the leading artists of the day. The château and its grounds, which combined traditional, fashionable, and innovative elements to spectacular effect, would inspire the design of many other estates - most notable Versailles.
With unprecedented access to the château and its gardens, this volume celebrates the properties rich history: from the purchase of the viscounty in 1641, through the Belle Epoque, the Enlightenment, the First World War, and the opening of Vaux to the public in 1968, including its culinary history and the popular spectacles held at the château today.
