Early in 2016, one of the most remarkable artworks in the Kunsthistorisches Museum returned to the public galleries - the Landsknecht armour made for Wilhelm von Rogen dorf in 1523, a truly outstanding masterpiece from the German Renaissance. Its steel sleeves drape in billowing, graceful folds as though cut from some pliable material, contradicting preconceived (and incorrect) modern ideas about cumbersome, inflexible armour. This is surely one of the reasons why the Rogendorf armour is today among the most famous and best-loved exhibits in the Kunsthistorisches Museum's Collection of Arms and Armour.

In 2005 fears about the armour's condition led to its temporary removal from the public galleries. The subsequent restoration proved extremely complex and has only been completed quite recently. In connection with that intervention, the political, social and artistic context of this exceptional armour was explored in depth. This book presents the results of that research project.
