The figure seen on this greetings card depicts Christ as the Good Shepherd, symbolising his care for and guidance of his flock, and was produced with other similar figures in Goa and Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka).
Rock crystal is one of the hardest materials on earth and is extremely difficult to carve, making works of art in this material desirable collectors' items. Sir Richard Wallace acquired this object in 1876 and is now on display in the new exhibition, Sir Richard Wallace: The Collector, on the lower ground floor of the museum.
