Sibyls were women whom the ancient Greeks considered to be oracles, or 'prophetesses who uttered divine revelations in frenzied states'. For many italian painters during the Baroque period, Sibyls were a popular subject to paint as it allowed them to dress their models in exotic, flamboyant garments such as this work by Bolognese artist Domenichino.
