The twenty-four views of Venice by Canaletto at Woburn are his largest and most important series of paintings. Commissioned by the Duke of Bedford in 1730, they have been kept at Woburn since 1792. This book, which accompanies the unique exhibition of the paintings at the Holburne Museum, Bath, is the first to be published about them.
The background to this extraordinary collection is described in an initial essay by a leading expert on the painter, Charles Beddington. Each painting is then discussed in detail, and in particular the connection to Canaletto's only surviving sketchbook. Illustrated with specially commissioned photographs and many details, this is one of the richest books on Canaletto's Venice yet produced.
Charles Beddington is an independent scholar and art dealer in London. He has published widely on Canaletto and other eighteenth century Italian view painters, and has organised - and written the catalogue for - several international exhibitions. Those include Canaletto in England, Dulwich Picture Gallery and Yale Center for British Art, 2006-2007, and Venice, Canaletto and his Rivals, The National Gallery, London and National Gallery of Art, Washington, 2010-2011.
